Egypt holds calls with Witkoff and regional counterparts — Cairo enters the mediation track
Egypt's foreign ministry held calls with US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and regional counterparts today [Asharq Al-Awsat, April 5]. This is new: Egypt was not previously confirmed as an active mediation party. Cairo's entry matters for two structural reasons. First, Egypt controls the Suez Canal — its interests in Hormuz resolution are direct and economic. Second, Egypt has historically served as a back-channel between Iran and Gulf states when official tracks break down. With Muscat, Geneva, and Vance tracks all stalled, a Cairo back-channel would be a fourth architecture. [Asharq Al-Awsat, April 5, 2026]
